National Mission for a Green India (NMGI)
Nodal:Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change
Contributing to India's NDCs through landscape-level ecological restoration, enhancement of forest and tree cover, restoration of degraded landscapes, livelihood diversification, and reduced dependence on conventional forest areas by promoting afforestation, agroforestry, and NTFP-based livelihoods, thereby creating an additional carbon sink.

About
Mission Overview
The National Mission for a Green India (GIM) aims to protect, restore and enhance India’s forest cover and respond to climate change through adaptation and mitigation measures. The Mission adopts a landscape-based approach for improving the quality of forest cover, restoring degraded ecosystems, increasing forest and tree cover, enhancing ecosystem services such as biodiversity, hydrological services and carbon sequestration, and improving forest-based livelihoods of local communities.
- Launched in 2014
- Nodal/Implementing: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
- Implementation framework: State Forest Development Agencies (SFDAs), Forest Development Agencies (FDAs) and Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMCs), with community participation at the local level.
- Implementation progress: ₹962.87 crore released to 17 States and 1 Union Territory for plantation/eco-restoration over 1,55,130 hectares.
- Convergence: Afforestation and restoration activities are implemented in convergence with relevant Centrally Sponsored Schemes, State Plan Schemes and CAMPA.
- NDC linkage: Contributes towards India’s target of creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5–3.0 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030.
- Monitoring: Multi-level monitoring includes the National Afforestation Dashboard & MIS, GIS/satellite-based monitoring, on-ground monitoring, social audits and third-party monitoring.
Vision
Enhance India's forest and tree cover, restore degraded landscapes and create an additional carbon sink — supporting climate adaptation and mitigation through community-based forestry.
