About Karnataka SAPCC
SAPCC Overview
Karnataka SAPCC 2.0 was prepared by the Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute under the Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment, with inputs from state departments, technical institutions and subject specialists. It updates the state's climate evidence and sector priorities and connects climate action with national climate commitments and sustainable-development objectives.
Climate profile
- Karnataka has three broad climatic settings: a wet tropical monsoon climate along the coast and adjoining Western Ghats, tropical savanna conditions across much of southern Karnataka and hotter semi-arid conditions in northern interior areas.
- Most rainfall is received from the southwest monsoon, with additional rainfall from the northeast monsoon and pre-monsoon storms. Rainfall varies sharply between the west coast and Western Ghats and the much drier interior plateau.
- Historical analysis in Karnataka SAPCC 2.0 indicates warming and regionally varied rainfall changes. Its projections indicate further warming, changes in seasonal rainfall and an increase in intense-rainfall conditions, while local outcomes vary between districts and models.
Climate stress at a glance
- The state's Deccan Plateau, Western Ghats and coastal plains create distinct climate, water, biodiversity and development conditions.
