About Punjab SAPCC
SAPCC Overview
Punjab SAPCC 2.0 covers 2021-2030 and was prepared by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology with GIZ support on behalf of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment.
Climate profile
- Punjab has a semi-arid, hot subtropical monsoon climate with very hot summers, a cool winter and pronounced seasonal temperature differences.
- Most rainfall comes from the southwest monsoon, while western disturbances contribute winter rain. The north-eastern districts near the Shivalik hills are generally wetter than the south-western districts.
- Punjab SAPCC 2.0 records warmer nights, more hot days, fewer cold days and a long-term decline in rainfall, including repeated deficient monsoons. Its projections indicate further warming and possible increases in annual rainfall, with substantial seasonal and district-level variation.
Climate stress at a glance
- Punjab's paddy-wheat production system and extensive irrigation make groundwater availability, soil health and farm resilience central planning concerns.
- Crop-residue burning and associated air pollution link agricultural practices with health, transport and energy priorities.
- Punjab SAPCC 2.0 also considers waterlogging in south-western districts, flood risk, heat, urban growth, industrial activity and pressures on forests, wetlands and biodiversity
