About Odisha SAPCC
SAPCC Overview
Odisha SAPCC 2.0 for 2021-2030 is the second phase of the state's climate-planning framework. It was coordinated by the Forest and Environment Department through the Climate Change Cell, with inputs from line departments and sector working groups. Odisha SAPCC 2.0 covers twelve sectors that reflect Odisha's coastal, rural, urban and industrial climate risks.
Climate profile
- Odisha has a tropical climate with hot and humid conditions, a pronounced southwest monsoon and a generally mild winter. Its varied terrain and soils are represented through ten agro-climatic zones.
- Odisha SAPCC 2.0 records rising maximum temperatures in parts of the state, warmer nights, more hot days and changes in the frequency of heavy-rainfall events. It also notes declining rainfall trends in some areas and strong year-to-year and regional variation.
- Future projections indicate further warming and geographically varied rainfall changes, with continuing risks from heat, dry spells, floods and intense rainfall.
Climate stress at a glance
- Odisha's approximately 480-kilometre coastline is exposed to cyclones, storm surge, coastal erosion, salinity intrusion and sea-level rise.
- Inland districts face combinations of heat, drought, flood and changing rainfall that affect agriculture, water, forests, health and rural livelihoods.
- Odisha SAPCC 2.0 also addresses climate risks affecting fisheries, livestock, mining and industry, energy systems, growing towns and cities, transport and waste management.
