About

Mission Overview

The National Water Mission (NWM) was conceived in 2008 as one of the eight core missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and was formally established on 6 April 2011 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. NWM is anchored by the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR), Ministry of Jal Shakti, and was continued vide Office Order dated 23 December 2021. The Mission aims to promote integrated water resources management with a focus on improving water use efficiency by 20%, promoting sustainable water conservation practices, ensuring equitable distribution, and enabling basin-level planning. Implementation is carried out through Line Ministries, State Governments, District Administrations, Urban and Rural Local Bodies, NGOs, CSOs, and Water User Associations, with the Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) campaign and Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB) initiative serving as its flagship activities. Reporting is quarterly as per the formats prescribed by MoEF&CC.
